O’Driscoll wins inaugural Carling/High House individual league 2012

Thursday August 16 2012

After six weeks of qualifying games in the Carling/High House sponsored men’s individual summer league it was Damian O’Driscoll who proved to be the cream of the crop when he came through to win in the grand finals played at the High House on Thursday night.
The first of the four quarter-finals kicked off sharp at nine with Steven Coveney (Brannigans) winning  against a below par David O’Donovan of the Joshua Tree, Kevin McDonnell booked his semi-final spot with a win over Dinny Bob’s of the Tower Bar, and the remaining two semi-final places saw JP Dowdall from Brannigans and Damian O’Driscoll also of Brannigans book their spots ahead of Martin Dineen (Anglers Sports Lounge) and John Wall (Joshua tree)respectively.
The first semi-final brought together team-mates Coveney and Dowdall, and it was Dowdall who seemed to be coasting as he led 3-0 in this best of seven semi-final, but in a total reversal of form it was Coveney who won the remaining four legs and his place in the final.
The second semi-final saw McDonnell run into a 2-0 lead only for O’Driscoll to peg him back and take it 4-2 to set up his meeting with Coveney in the final.
The final also played over the best of seven legs saw O’Driscoll take the opening leg on a double 20 but Coveney hit back to square after a maximum 180 helped him to a double 2 finish.
However Coveney had no answer to O’Driscoll’s three hands of 140 in the third leg as a double 8 saw him lead 2-1 overall.
The fourth leg again saw a maximum 180 along with a 123, 85 and 95 followed by a double 4 for a fourteen dart leg from O’Driscoll and it was all over as O’Driscoll hit a 107 checkout in the fifth leg, 60, 7, double 20 for a 4-1 win to claim this inaugural Carling/High House sponsored summer individual league.
